It seems to be that once a good online game rises up in popularity, we start getting retards swarming over the game and totally ruining the online experience.
Just look at the blizzard games. They are all awesome games but playing them online, the huge community of retards and idiots just ruins it. If there is any flaw in the blizzard games its just their player communitty.
Its the same thing with Counterstrike. I've played CS since beta 7 and it was really great. Then you have the script kiddies coming in with their idiot l33t languages.
And the thing is that now with the importance of playing games online, game companies have tried to rein in the communities. Just look at Everquest. I heard on their board, if threads started going too out of control the mods wont think twice of just taking down the message boards for a day or two.
But the more you control the mod the less popular you become. And if the crowd really wants to do something it will. There was an incident with WoW where players got fedup with Blizzard taking its time fixing the Warrior class and decided to crash the server. THis was done by massing enough players in one area of a server, effectively crashing it.
Point is that I think wherever you play, we all are going to just be stuck with idiots and there is no way to change it.

1. Follow an MMORPG as soon as you hear about it
2. Play the open beta
3. Buy the retail version
4. Go to five different information sites that also have discussion forums on that game. Spent all your time on these forums.
5. Install the game and get to level 5. Then spend the rest of your life on the forums.
6. Go see an awesome movie, read an awesome book, or play an awesome single player game, and complain how the game is nothing like either of those.
7. Follow the developers lives in detail, going so far as to take pictures of their family through their window by perching yourself on a tree nearby. Sue them when they refuse to listen to your innovative ideas.
8. Discuss this on the boards.
9. Get tired of the game and threaten to quit, then lookup a third party program that will make your life easier.
10. Complain on the boards some more.
11. See step 1.

The average IQ is about 100. Think of a person of average IQ. Then realize that half the world is stupider than that person.
I await the sound of your screaming.
Your right, if a game is given only to people who "deserve" it, then it is unpop., or if they make a game too hard, then its unpop.
the world is full of stupid people there is nothing any of us can do to get around them, I mean, look at /b on 4chan!
I only hope that one of these days natural selection will start doing its job again and the stupid people of the world will be filtered out again.

you fail, according to design of IQ system, IQ 100 is median. That means, 75% of the population could have IQ 100, and so on. There's an actual chart giving the percentage of the population with IQ 100 somewhere, but I'm too lazy to google it.

Pure theoretical wankery, because in practice they don't.
Bell curve, bell curve.

I know it's a fucking bellcurve but there's a huge amount of people with IQ 100. Therefore, 50% of the population cannot have 99 or less IQ.

What the fuck does it matter? bnet prepubescent 11 year olds are fucking annoying and think they are cool, IQ is irrelevant, and 10 is an example of the problem... people who think they are being funny, but actually pissing people off...

teh thing that i think is worse than lil kiddies on WoW or something is... Elistist Jerks (ya know what i mean?). I myself am in an 'elite' guild and everyone hates us for that and shows animosity towards us. Since we are so popular serverwise, we do 1 little thing wrong and it scars the guild and people bitch and moan about it til no end. Also people discriminate players despite their skills cause they are in a guild that actually wants to play the game to the fullest.
But yea kiddies do suck

The only true solution is for the makers of MMORPGs to stop having one single game server that everyone must play on. I am a strong supporter of the "rouge server" idea. Let anyone who has the bandwidth and a good server host up for the game. Then it is simply a process of stating to those idiot kids that "this is my house you will follow my rules" and you then boot their asses flying off of your server. Is this a bad thing to rule over your server with an iron fist? Nope, it is not, because if anyone can make a server for an MMORPG, that stupid little kid can just stand up and dust the dirt from his ass and shake his fist back at you and say, "I'll make my own server and it'll have hookers and blackjack!" Then he goes away never to return again and you keep the quality players on your server and the stupid players go to the stupid kid's server.
However, instead of following through with this good idea, most MMORPG makers are fighting against rouge servers. They work hard to make them illegal. The irony is that if they spent all that energy trying to improve the community instead, we wouldn't have people wanting a rouge server to play on in the first place.
Oh well, I suppose shooting yourself in the foot is easier because it's a much closer target.
Good idea, in theory. In practice, this would just lead to "single-player" servers.
Why would you want to play on a server that is -99 in all skills? Why would you want to play in a server with +99 skills? Why play in a server without admin console?
It's a good idea. But, I find that if it wasn't illegal, people would just simply jump onto trying to make their own servers and pray that people would play on them.

It would only make attracting people a popularity contest, and occasionally some servers would merge members for whatever reason. Why's this any different from Clans that shut out outside people, or the net in general?

yea but that also means half the word is smarter than that person
Unfortunately, this is how it always turns out. The most popular fansite is overrun with idiots, and once that happens, almost all the decent players leave to form a community of partial exclusion elsewhere. If you manage to find this second community, one of two things will happen:
1)You will find a great place to hang out, discuss and enjoy the game with other people.
2) j00 found a bunch of elit1st fagg0ts who d0n't enjoe thinks like pk, tk, ks, l33t h4x, looting, kekeke zerg rush, chat spamming pub with 'LOL P3N1S!! I H4V A BIG 0N3' x 20 every second (ps. dey are f4gs cuz they banned m3 18 times already. lol n00bs).
The second response explains why partial elitism and intolerance is required to maintain a healthy community player base.
except that these "rogue servers" dont require you to buy their game, just get the files off of bittorrent or something.
Also, these "rogue servers" mods typically abuse anyone who isnt their friend/ass kisser and twink anyone who is.
I have yet to play on a private server of any MMO where the owner/mods/gms dont have their own little circle of faggotry, and screw with people for fun. That being said, if I ran my own private server I would do it too. so meh

As Gabe from Penny Arcade once said, "The worst part about multiplayer games is that you have to play them with other people."
Honestly, I feel as if the greatest strength of multiplayer games is also their Achilles' heel. I attribute some of my worst memories from playing World of Warcraft to fools I had the misfortune to have come across; however, the only thing that kept me playing during my last month was the connections that I had formed with my guild, a group of folks I really enjoyed teaming with (even though the game itself had become joyless for me). So, yeah. Just my two cents.

"The average IQ is about 100. Think of a person of average IQ. Then realize that half the world is stupider than that person."
That idea implies an even distribution; consider the fact that two people with an IQ of 80 are balanced by one individual with an IQ of 140. (Note that an IQ of 70 is the borderline for retardation, while 140 is the threshold for genius.)
Considering that a score of 150 is more common than a score of 50, I would submit that more than half of the world would be stupider than that average person. Personally, I'm kinda curious as to what the mean IQ score would happen to be.

Eugh. Rogue servers. I've seen quite a few in my time, mostly for 2D games. 29's right. Faggotry Circles tend to pop up like wildfire. I've only found one server that actually worked. It was the merger of like, 5 different servers, each of moderate populations. It was an RO server, but I stopped playing a year or two before I started WoW. But it was a high population server, and since there were like, 5 Inner Circles, they would always keep tabs on each other, thus making it sure they could be fair to everyone. That alone can make a man weep. The only reason a server worked was because of circles keeping against each other. And thus the circles bloomed a Flower of Fun!

My understanding is that IQ has a normal distribution, so (assuming it's impossible for two people to have perfectly identical intelligence), 50% of people are dumber than the other half.
Not that IQ means all that much. WAIS-R is a better metric.
Name:
Anonymous2005-11-19 15:19
Hmmm... well, since IQ is technically a median, it's better to say that around 75% are "around" normal; ie 120-90, and the rest are compromised of really stupid people and really smart ones
