The bright colors, wacky take on reality, and abstraction of concepts in reality to game ideas no matter how outlandish. And the art. Do you think game designers are "inspired" by illegal fungi? By harnessing the "mind expanding truth" of distorted reality, could one make something into both a coherent game design and a madman's twisted view of reality? Take the following:
Super Mario Bros (Mushrooms with red spots are good, and will make you feel bigger. Don't mistake them for the poisonous kind!)
Final Fantasy XI: Includes the items Woozyshroom and Sleepshroom, as well as the fungus enemy "Fly Agaric" (a hullucinogenic mushroom)
Seiken Densetsu: Frequent mushroom enemies in all games, with bright cartoony antmosphere and odd plant designs (vegetable/animal hybrids, etc)
Katamari Damacy: Only after surpassing the 300m goal at the last level and picking up the largest objects do you finally come to the edge of the map where you must pick up gigantic pink mushrooms.
Cowboy Bebop episode: Mushroom Samba (self explanatory)
