Tobal #1 was the shit... quest mode was such a new thing for fighting games and gave buttloads of replay value.  I never played Tobal #2, but I heard good things.  Tobal #3 came out for wonderswan color, but actually it didn't.

There are few beatemup RPGs.  River City Ransom and some other Kunio games have some light RPG elements, but are mostly beatemups.  Guardian Heroes is Treasure's awesome beatemup with RPG stats and enhancements, but is still linear.  Other games like The Two Towers and Return of the King are linear action games with stats that are upgraded at each level based on "experience" from killing monsters, but the linearity of each level means you'll probably kill the same number anyways.

Tobal 2, on the other hand is a dungeon crawler with fighting game elements.  It's not just a straightforward "run through level and beat up stuff to upgrade slightly" game.  It's more like what would happen if a Tekken or Streetfighter EX character found themselves in a dungeon and had to beat up monsters with their moves.  The combat wasn't perfect, and neither were the monsters, but the concept of the game could definitely be brought to a sequel or similar game.

I can't count how many times I've wanted to say "screw this turn based crap" and go down to back kick or down to forward punch on something.

And no, Diablo style "click and kill" games don't count, as you're not really using fighting moves.  You're just... clicking.

Am I the only one who enjoyed the Forsaken Dungeon minigame that came with Ehrgeiz?

Wasn't Ehrgeiz the fighting game with Square charaters? Was that any good? I never actually got the game and I imagine its quite impossible to find nowadays.

Eh, it was okay.  Forsaken Dungeon was the best part.

I want Japan's CEO on the phone right now! Tell them to make an RPG with an actual fighting system! None of this waffling around crap like Tobal or Legaia! DO IT OR YOU'RE FIRED!
Also, if you liked Ehrgiez's dungeon, you are a masochist and I fear you.

TOBAL 2's RPG mode gave a headache. Maybe it's because I can't read japanese? I found a chocobo, though. So it wasn't all for nothing. Even used it to beat up folks on versus mode. KWEH!
