I know there are a few factors to consider when asking which is better for online gaming, but generally which one is better. The cable that I am thinking about getting is advertised as 4Mb/384Kbps. Is 384Kbs upload gonna keep things pretty lag free on my part?

On a side note I am an idiot for useing a ! instead of a # to see if world4ch uses trip codes

Latency doesn't necessarily have anything to do with bandwidth.

Well I know the bandwith of my 56k had a lot to do with latency.

>>4 The key word here is 'necessarily'; bandwith /can/ effect latency when you're speaking in such extreams as comparing dialup to cable or dsl. But when you compare dsl and cable the differences are so small that it's not even something you should be worrying about. Just choose whichever service is giving you the best price.

cable is so much better it's hard to belive. ive got 4.1 dl and 820 up. i can easily dl stuff and play online.
my friend got adsl which is suposed to be 3mbdl and it's twice as slow for some reason.

Cable offerss 4meg now? Since when? I know charter might up to 5 this summer but 4 now? No way in hell you have 820 up with cable unless your uncapped.
Anyway. DSL can be faster because you dont share the fucking line, but it's quality isn't as good so you get more packet loss. Cable though doesnt lose as many and the downside is.. It's shared meaning you can get slow down times from fucks who have no life like us, and people who uncap.

From what I know, we are the slowest broadband country in the world, aside from 3rd world countries. Most companies that offer broadband services offer speeds upwards of 20 Mbps for the same price as aDSL (about 35 USD)

>20 Mbps
What country might that be? :D~~~~

Most Asian countries. (Except 3rd world ones, of course)

is that just in paris or is that true in rural sites?

cable is crappy if you have lots of neighbors on the same circuit
also consider the proliferation of digital cable these days, it seriously impacts latency
when everyone's home around me with their tvs on, my pings to game servers go to shit.
if your cable node is overloaded you will get horrible latency(lag) with online games.. you may still retain very high download speeds though, just dropping packets all over the place
also for qos upstream caps... your download will choke if you cant upload acks fast enough, do not you saturate your ul to the cap
cable speeds are generally much higher than dsl, but dsl is a dedicated line ...so latencies are very low always, the tier you pay for is exactly what you get(as long as youre within a certain disance of the switch)
dsl for gamers, cable for leechers in general
some cable nodes are relatively empty.. those are ideal, you will never notice latency and keep all the bandiwdth you can grab
but most cableco suck and overload nodes as more subscribers in your area sign up.. then your latency goes to shit during peak usage

Like over here with stupid fucks and their Bit Torrent because they don't know how to find a more underground way.

Nothing is more fun than playing fps games with 400-800 constant ping. Here's to the network's upgrade to OC3 giving me constant low ping again...

My cable here offers 10mbit down and 1mbit up. DSL doesn't even compare.

same here, cablevision 10/1 is the advertised speed
just they overload their network, 1mbit up is autocapped to 15k if you keep it sustained upload too often
10mbit down is more like 800k, ive never seen higher
and ping/latency for gaming during peak hours can suck... also there is packet loss by nature of cable systems

Cable has been noctorius for putting upstream data rate as a lowest priority among all data rates (including television services). Not only that, the way Cable works, and the way you and your neighbors are hooked up, make it a bad choice for games.
Cable service in a specific area can slow down significantly if one person there uses alot of it. Which means: If everyone on your block had Cable, and played something like Halo, speed would suffer alot.
Where as with DSL, your upstream rate is better (As seen with a 1.5 MBit DSL modem getting somewhere around 850 KBit upstream) and the way it's set up, people in your area can't slow down your speed significantly by using alot of their own speed.
I would say DSL is better for gamers, and bittorrent users. Cable is better for web surfing, and IRC leeching.
The primary downside to DSL is that it is very distance sensitive. The furthur you get from the switch the higher your ping. This is why it has a 6 mile radial limit. The advantages of DSL are primarily connection stability.
There is a significant difference is the ideology of cable companies versus that of phone companies. If you contact your phone company and inform them that your phone is not working, they probably are already working on the problem. This ideology carries over to their internet services as well. Cable companies on the other hand automaticly assume that if the user isn't complaining then there is no problem.
You have to choose what is more important for whatever type of gaming you're doing. If you play RPG's where ping is not a significant issue and you need to be on for hours at a time go with DSL, but if you primarily play first-person shooters, where 10 ping can mean life or death, cable would be your best bet.

personally, i use net0. it is a good deal. free internet.
I have DSL but had been on cable for like a decade since first switching from 56k.
I'm also at a different area so I don't know how the cable would perform but there were NO working phone lines in the place, they had to try and put a new one in and it has been absolute shit for p2p games but seems to work as good/better than cable for c2s games, kind of, I actually get a lot more ploss than I ever have with cable.

My cable gets 10/1 in a pretty dense area of cable users.
