Rondo of Blood vs Dracula X

Besides the graphics and music judging on gameplay alone, which version do you think is better?

Just to clear things up, Dracula X is the name for Rondo, just not the full name. Yeah, Dracula X SNES is alright, but I *really* like the Japanese version better. The greenish-wierd blood in the U.S. version, that bad logo scaling effect (the logo itself it dumb, too), and the boomerang as opposed to holy cross...Egh.

I've always liked the remixed/original areas in Dracula X SNES/XX SFC. Many of them are straight out of Castlevania Bloodlines, and getting to play with a character who controls decently (doesn't stutter all the way up and down flights of stairs, for one) is good.

Being able to hit behind you is fun too. One thing that's always had me wondering, though, is why Konami decided to put those platforms in the very first area - you can use those to try out some various jumping tricks/glitches with the game, but you shouldn't really need those and seeing how Richter doesn't latch onto a platform at a certain height (though his feet are above it) unless he does a backflip is not that impressive.

On the other hand, I once beat the whole crumbling causeway sequence killing all the mermen while only using left on the d-pad and backflipping repeatedly. The game's much more open to inspired game playing than Rondo...take that as you will.

I just played through Symphony of the Night again during the last few weeks.  Some of the weapons have reallllly cheap specials *cough*rapier*cough*.

I really, really like the first half of SOTN and get deathly bored by the endgame. The RPG elements work okay, in the beginning, when there's a possibility of death. Halfway through, you're leveled so high that the game's challenge completely disappears. It doesn't matter any more if you can get hit. I'm not talking about going out of your way by power leveling or seeking out the overpowered items; this naturally happens, without ANY of that. Stuff like the Crissaegrim is the nail in the coffin for the endgame. I'd like the next Castlevania game to be something more structured; it doesn't have to be an old-style platformer, and it doesn't have to be done by the SOTN formula. Either way can work. SOTN's problem is just some pretty huge oversights in design.

Not like you HAVE to use the Valmanway...

Try going through SOTN nekkid and see if that doesn't improve the challenge any.

Yeah, I like the SNES Dracula X better than CHI NO RONDO. Unlike Super Castlevania, Dracula X had the classic Belmont controls from the NES days, updated into modern times with the backflip and the item crash. No, there were no whip upgrades, but that was because your whip was already upgraded enough. There were fewer stages in the snes version, true, but the stages were longer and better designed. You have to do much more jumping in the first level of Dracula X than in its turbo-duo counterpart, for instance. The snes game didn't seem to fly by as fast, which I appreciated. And yes, both games have all sorts of inspired gameplay. You want to moonwalk your way through the entire first stage? It's very well possible. Hell, whenever I get a key I use it as my primary attack. GIVES YOUR LIFE MEANING WOULDN'T YOU SAY.

I really don't find Dracula X to be that much worse than Chi no Rondo. It was closer to the NES games than Super Castlevania ever was, in any case.

super castlevania 4 was by far the best snes caslevania game. shitload of levels, controlable whip, challenging puzzles and bosses, one of the few caslevanias that succeeds at "creepy atmosphere" in some levels. And most important of all, the kickass tunes made way for a nice collection of OCremixes available for download.

I haven't played rondo
I never could stand to go through even the first level of the sfc castlevania, but the controllable whip was cool, but not somthing that could make me stand the game
My favorite is Circle of the Moon with Castlevania 3 in 2nd place.
