For Christmas I was kindly given "Hourglass of Summer", a visual-story game on DVD. You usually know these in the form of H-games; "Hourglass of Summer" has the "pick up girls" focus of an H-game, but without the pornography. That was okay with me because I already have enough pornography.
The artwork was beautiful-- the low budget prevented very many poses for the characters, but it was easy to use your imagination with the nice style.
However, the art was marred by a 1fps framerate (I guess that compression keeps it to a single DVD). Some idiot at the studio decided that even though they had gone the 1fps route, it would be cool to have Powerpoint-like transitions anyway! It looks like the DVD player is broken, and it is annoying to watch.
For playing the DVD on my computer, I tried to use Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic, Ogle, Xine, and VLC. They all failed miserably in their own ways. So I took it downstairs to my Most Revered and Holy Magical DVD Player ("Classic DVD102") that I bought for $50 on eBay and which has never failed me. It played the game correctly.
I played it for 30 minutes, just barely getting involved in the elaborate and interesting plot, then decided to save. The password system involved paging through a bunch of frames to get each individual character. After the 6th character, my DVD player lost its place somehow. ARRRRGHHH
I would recommend not buying visual-story games on DVD. Stick to Windows-only for now.
