Beatmania IIDX, Dance Dance Revolution, pop'n music, Guitar Freaks/drummania, hell even Pump it Up or Amplitude. Anyone else here play 'em? Right now I'm an addict to Pump it Up (Exceed) and Guitar Freaks (3rd mix PS2). And really, the Dualshock 2 isn't a bad controller for GuitarFreaks. It's awkward but works well. As for Pump it Up I'm just starting nightmare (Passed three, hardest so far is Empire of the Sun).
So who else is a music game fanatic?

I'm slowly getting out of them after playing for about 7 years, but I've been playing them here and there for that long. Mostly Beatmania/Pop'n, though.

Why in god's name has Konami never brought over a single Beatmania game? I've seen arcades simply import the machine directly from Japan, and it's still played constantly. But no, we get a couple watered down versions of DDR...
The third version has Under Pressure by Queen, so it wins in my books.

Guitar Freaks for feelin like a rock star, and Para Para Paradise for lookin like a dork (even moreso than DDR)
Drummania too, but I've only played that a couple times. Better than that god-awful MTV one at least.

for me, mainly DDR, because the nearest IIDX machine is around 30-40 mins away.. i can pass pretty much every song on DDR (psmo gives me a bit of trouble though)

I got into IIDX and Pop'n a while back and played the hell out of both of them, but IIDX more than Pop'n. The songs-I-like ratio is higher.
They released a PSOne version in Europe - it was a mix of original tracks from the Japanese game, and new European ones. But Konami Europe were too cheap to include original Japanese controllers, so we just got these crap ones made under license by Radica.

You're not missing anything with the Japanese ASCII 5-key Beatmania controllers. The keys are sharp rectangles that are clickier than the Konami ASC (without the good response those keys have), and the turntable comes dangerously close to falling out with enough play. They're practically giving the things away on Yahoo JP auctions.
Course I've never played on the UK controller. It could, theoretically, get worse.

I've been playing Bemani games for a while.. DDR since 3rd mix, then I stopped playing around Max's arcade release, and then got into BM and IIDX, and PnM shortly after that. Tried GF and DM for a while too, but eventually went back to IIDX and stuck with it for a couple years.
I'm not quite as hardcore into IIDX as I used to be, but.. here's hoping to KCEJ keeping up IIDX home releases anyway :)

I could have sworn I replied to this.
Keeping it short due to laziness now, I play IIDX and Pop'n mainly, with DDR on the side because it's the only decent (read, not PPP) arcade Bemani at the arcade I frequent.

9th Style CS was already announced and is coming out on March 24th. With the way things are going, they'll probably continue releasing them.
I saw one at Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco a little while back, actually.
Anyway, I play DDR(though not nearly as much as I used to), a bibt of IIDX, and Pop'n. Pop'n's my favorite of the three.

IIDX is the most awful gaming treadmill I've ever continued playing.

As in bang your head against it until you get good.
There's zero learning curve, so you bang your head against it getting in. Once you're in, things get harder and harder until it hits a ceiling at the five or so songs in the game that are considered the hardest. Every time a new IIDX version comes out, a DEFINITELY THIS TIME THE HARDEST song comes along, and the very very small group of players who have gotten to this point bang their heads against those songs trying to pass/AAA them.
Vicious cycle. It's a good time, though.

is HIPHOP MANIA any good?[for MAME
emulator]
any good jmusic?

w/ mame the game expects an analog turntable, you can use two keyboard keys (Left and right) or your mouse or something, but its just not the same for scratching.
Which brings up a point, scratching in beatmania sometimes makes sounds nothing like scratching a record. (Like it was just another key)

Hiphop Mania is the US name of Beatmania (5key).
Almost all 5key mixes, save a couple later ones not emulated were pretty much trash. Not worth it, you're better off downloading a BM simulator and some simfiles.
There was hardly any decent music in the BM series until IIDX anyway.

I've played BM III. It's the only beatmania of any kind around here. What I wouldn't give for IIDX... I've played most of them, and DM, DMX, and PPP are the only ones I don't like.

I liked beatmania 6th THE UK UNDERGROUND ('A` )

I enjoy me some DDR. I like the move to a 20-point rating system, hopefully they use this as an opportunity to re-rate all the misrated songs they have.
So far the home version of DDRx seems spot-on in its rankings, here's to hope the trend continues.

I've acually been looking into buying a beatmania game, but I don't know which one would be good to start with, or a controller for that matter. Any suggestions?

US beatmania has one of the best controllers. The mix itself sucks.
I basically started off with US, RED and 7th
