pour contents of one can crush pineapple into pan, dump out one box cake mix (preferably yellow) on top, plop a few splotches of canned cherry pie filling on top of cake mix, slice up a stick of butter on the cake mix that's not covered by cherry shit and bake at 350 until in looks edible.

I find cakes to be horrifically dry and saliva absorbing unless they have a lot of jam and creamy filling.
baking is based on formulas not recipes, hence baking by the book is really the ONLY way to bake a cake.

Ok THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT:
Cake flour (that special flour regular flour sucks ass)
Eggs (for certain cakes, just the egg whites)
Water (or milk, depending on cake, again)
etc etc you get the gist
personally I love Angel Food Cake so here's the recipe:
FIRST OF ALL YOU NEED this special round pan that is really deep. It is labeled so you'll recognize it. It's specially for Angel Food Cake.
Get like 12 egg whites (crack egg in half with a knife, shift the yolk around the two halves of the shell until you get the egg white out, it's annoying I know)
1 1/2 cups of sugar
1 cup cake flour
1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
1 1/2 teaspoons of cream of tartar
1/2 teaspoon of salt
Oven heat: 375 degrees, preheated (190 C)
be sure the pan is totally dry and free of oils and shit. Now, mix (sift together) the flour and 3/4 cups of the sugar THAT'S IT for now.
In another bowl, whip the egg whites with the vanilla tartar cream and salt to like medium stiffness and whatnot. Then start adding the rest of the sugar. When it hits MAXIMUM VOLUME: fold in the flour/sugar combo, 1/3 of it at a time. DO NOT OVERMIX. Put batter in the tube (the pan thing) and bake for 40-45 minutes, just long enough the that the cake springs and is bouncy when you touch it.
When you're done, place it upside down on a bottle (the cooling can cause it to collapse under its own weight)
then invert it onto a plate.
Enjoy your fucking cake.

You dumbasses have it all wrong.
First: Mix 4/3 cups of butter into a bowl and add plenty of milk and flour.
Next: Dump mixture into nearby sink.
Then: Throw fruits, sugar, and any creme filling you wish onto nearby family members or pets in fustration.
Then: Bake the butter and milk at about 80 degrees celsius intil golden brown. Decorate with mass amounts of sugar and coffee. Mix thuroughly.
Last: Go to the store and buy a cake.
