Spicy Ketchup.. stuff

Name: Anonymous 2005-11-05 5:43

This has been nagging at me for a while...
I go to a lot of Chinese restaurants, and often order fried shrimp. With the shrimp comes a red sauce that tastes like a spicy ketchup. Today I had some shrimp, and ended asking the waitress about it, but she said only that they made it by adding spices and such to normal ketchup. Given that no less than three of the places I go to serve this same sauce with little or no variation, I'm guessing theres a somewhat well known recipe for it or something of the sort.

Anyone have any idears?

It's called "Barbecue Sauce".

Cocktail sauce?

Similar, but doesn't really have much vinegar taste to it. On the few times I've had hamburgers at Chinese places, I've used it in substitution of normal ketchup.

It isn't sriracha, is it?

It's Chili Garlic hot sauce (or some variation). Depending on where you go, they might mix it in with ketchup to make it milder. There's too many brands to list, but if you go to an Asian supermarket you should be able to find some in the sauce aisle. Some brands have the chili pepper seeds ground in, some have it a bit chunky, kinda like peanut butter.

Yeah, it's probably Sriracha.  Gotta love it.

Don't change these.
