China develops its own mobile operating system

Known as China Operating System, or COS, the new operating system is said to be more secure than other mobile platforms such as iOS and Android. It was unveiled last week by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Liantong Network Communications Technology.

   The operating system appears to be based on Android, despite claims from Chinese officials that it was developed completely in China.

   COS is said to be able to support Java apps, HTML 5 websites and be compatible with more than 100,000 apps.

   There are no COS phones for sales yet, but China Mobile and China Telecom are said to be testing devices.

China is seeking technological self reliance because China understand that it's critical to the future success or failure of their nation. 

All of this stuff being reported in little piece parts are just tiny steps in that monumental process. I think their Loongson 64bit MIPS processor line is the most notable step they've taken in that process.

Being American, I personally find it notable because Intel is in bed with the NSA.. Something if you said a few years ago, even in hacker circles, you'd be labeled tin foil freak show.. but today is common knowledge. Even mainstream circles like Debian and FreeBSD mailing lists are keen on this shit.
