Linux OS Tips?

Name: Huh? 2013-11-19 22:29

So i'm going to be "learning the ropes" of using a Linux OS, and from what I understand, i'll need an inconceivable amount of knowledge prior to using it to it's full extent. Anything some of you experts out there would recommend me do before I learn this? Maybe coding or programming? I'm a noob to this stuff, help me out here.

Firstly, what do you need your computer to do?

Games? Multimedia? Office work? Entertainment?

I started by running the first distro I saw (DamnSmallLinux) in VirtualBox, but are you planning on installing Linux? Do you want to do something with it in particular or just mess around? You don't need to learn to code, program or even script to learn to use linux! Run Lubuntu or Xubuntu off a live cd (or usb stick with unetbootin, to get persistent storage) and explore! If you run into a problem google to see if linuxquestions of askubuntu or any other website has the answer and you will get experience, then learn how to use the shell! There are also decent books which can take you from knowing nothing about the shell to using vim and rock-hard links and stuff that teach you fast, but try to have fun

Do the LFS book, you'll understand how to do things by the end.

Don't change these.
