Ok, so something is up with my external hard drive, and I am freaking out. Whenever I try to open it through my computer, I get a message saying:
"Windows cannot access the specified device path or file. You may not have appropriate permissions to access the item."
This is total bullshit. I am running Vista (I know). I haven't dropped my hard drive, so I don't think it's fucked or anything, but I'm freaking out because all of my music is on there. Please help!
As incentive, I have nudes of a girl who wanted my cock about two years back. I declined, as I was, and still am in a relationship. However, she sent me a few nudes, and they're on that hard drive...

on my computer, right click on the drive, properties, security tab, advanced, owner, edit, other users and groups, advanced, find now, find your account name, select it, or just select "everyone", check the "replace owner on subcontainers and objects", apply, then go to the permissions tab and give your account full control, also check the box "replace all child permissions blah blah...", apply, fap, take a nap, ok, ok, back on the security tab on properties, hit edit, add, again advanced, add your vindovs vista account name thingie, apply, select your name, check the box "full control", apply, access your drive, upload nudes to rapidshit or w/e you like, post link here, ???, profit.

I tried that, and got this error message:
"An error occurred while applying security information to:
H:\
The system cannot find the specified file"
followed by another one reading:
"Unable to save permission changes on FreeAgentDrive (H:)
The system cannot find the file specified."
What the fuck does that mean?

go to start menu, run, cmd, on the menu right click to run as administrator, con the cmd box enter: chkdsk H: /f/r , enter, yes, let it run and see if it fixes it, you most likely have corrupted files and thats why you get the cannot find file error

also if you have another comp you could try the drive on, or a linux live cd and see if it works there.

Yeah, I tried the drive on my girlfriends computer, and it didn't work. I also plugged my second drive in, and that one worked fine. I am now coming to terms with the fact that I just lost about 17,000 songs, among other things.
So, any idea how this happened, exactly? I just moved across the country, so I would naturally think that it had gotten knocked in my car, (despite the fact that it was well packaged) except I've used it since unpacking it, and it worked for awhile. Can hard drives really just go bad that easily? I mean, I took good care of the thing.

IF >>4 didn't fix it or indicated that there was file corruption, Your vista installation's ACL (Access control list or whatever) is probably fucked up, denying you access to both change permissions and access.
When you tried it in your gf's comp did you get the same message as on your own?
I have friend who had a simmilar problem, we backed up his data to another drive using gparted live cd, and then reformated his drive and changed os to win7
