I'm having some trouble with a laptop, I pulled the heatsink and fan out ages ago to clean it as it was caked in dust, and I know it was a mistake but doing this seems to have ruined the thermal compound that was obviously factory fresh before I fucked with it.
The laptop now turns itself off when it feels like it, and of course the processor and graphics cores are feeling a bit warm, will applying a nice new pad of compound cure this?. I think I know the answer to this question but the only way for it to do it's job is if there is 100% contact between the two surfaces and the compound?
