Unallocated 1TB External HDD

Name: Anonymous 2010-11-19 9:28

I need to partition an external HDD I bummed off a pal. For some reason, the drive is recognized but I cannot seem to partition it for use, under normal methods. Boot menu from install disk does not allow me to use the format or partition create functions, because of "Windows cannot be installed on USB devices." The MMC menu also recognizes the HDD under Disk Management - listed as an unallocated 931.51GB volume, but the context menu has the partitioning options grayed out.

Are there other options available, or is this thing a brick?

you didn't start the MMC as Administrator.   Use the ole'  Run as Administrator and re-start the MMC.
