Windows Vista Won't Boot

I'm trying to repair a friend's laptop.  It won't boot, and on inspection it looks like it's choking on avgrkx86.sys, which I understand to be a system file for AVG (duh).  The solution that I've found seems to be to rename or remove the file (and, after Windows actually boots, proceed to repair or remove AVG).

However, I can't find a solution for getting rid of the file.  I don't have a rescue CD and can't make one (my computer is a netbook, so I have no CD drive to burn with).  I do have a flash drive that boots linux (but is useless because it can't do anything with the NTFS file format of his hard drive) and I have a flash drive that boots into Win98 DOS, but for some reason can't see the hard drive.  When I run fdisk off of the flash drive, it can see the disk, but DOS itself sees only the flash drive as C: and no other disks.

Any suggestions?
