How do you partition a drive in XP? If you partition does it mean it formats it first?

you partition it (divide in however many parts you want) then format each partition with whatever file system you want, for windows use ntfs, for linux use ext3 and for mac use hfs.

forgot to add, if you are in windows xp and want to partition/format a drive, right click on "my computer" then click on manage and select disk management from the left panel and on the empty disk, right click on it an create new partition, give it a size and a name if you want, the only thing is that with windows you can only format using fat32 (not recommended but mostly used for 4gb and bellow pendrives) and ntfs. also, don't mess with your windows partition unless you really know what you are doing.

Ok thanks for the info. What I want to do is move my windows installation onto a separate partition so that if I have to format I don't lose my stuff.

then you´d be better off ghosting your windows partition and then cloning it to another partition that way. also is good to keep a ghost in an external hdd just in case you fuck up.
