Linux for Laptop

Name: Anonymous 2010-05-28 11:20

Hi, I want to install some new OS on my laptop (having Win2k atm). Preferably some Linux Distribution, since FreeBSD somehow doesn't work and Windows is just gay. Setup:

256 Mhz
128 MB Ram
4 GB Hard Drive

No I don't want to buy a new one. I consider myself advanced when it comes to Linux / Computers so I prefer a text installer. Distributions I already tried out:
- DeliOS: I always have to use a floppy to boot from this so its pretty crappy.
- Debian: Doesn't work (too few memory).

So what do u suggest?

How so? What happened when you tried to install it? A BSD would be my first suggestion over Linux, mostly for philosophical reasons.

Well when installing i select "Boot FreeBSD" or something like that the screen goes black for more then 30mins and I couldn't find anything on the net about that.

Hmm.. that sounds strange, maybe your particular CD drive isn't supported.

I guess Linux it is, in which case I would DSL (Damn Small Linux), it has the 2.4 Kernel and should work well with old hardware.

Net BSD, Open Solaris

Puppy Linux. I used it on a PIII machine with 64mb of RAM and it ran pretty fast for internet stuff.

i dont know how easy it is, but maybe trying "sugar on a stick" i think its called, its the one the use on the olpc project, it might be worth a try? i use Ubuntu, but that definatly wont work with your specs

OpenSolaris? Are you kidding me?

NetBSD is cool (in fact, the big three BSDs are cool), but I thought it was called OpenSlowaris for a reason.

Have you ever actually used OpenSolaris? Or do you blindly go by what /g/ spouts on about?

It was pretty damn laggy in GNOME. I haven't tried it without ZFS or a GUI.
