Router trouble

WLANfags, my netgear router's DSL modem seems to be dead. now i've got an old standalone, working DSL modem and need a new router. Linksys WRT54GL, good idea? Or should I better get one with built-in modem?

get the wrt54gl and then replace firmware with freewrt or openwrt.

If it's supported by the good alternative firmwares, it's worth buying.
