Routers with bandwidth allocation?

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-15 0:55

Does anyone have a recommendation for a cheap router with such a feature?

Say you have a Broadband connection of X Mbps, and there are N users connected at the time.  The router will automatically limit each user's download speed to X/N Mbps.

There a few assholes on my apartment Wifi who completely saturates the connection with BT downloads..  they refuse to schedule their downloading to night hours or to readjust their settings to interfere less with others.  The management here is aware of complaints but would need to replace the router for it to happen..  I've found some routers with this feature but they cost several thousand dollars each..  any ideas where I can find a more affordable one to recommend?

You could try QoS settings with ddwrt or tomato firmwares, both of which can run on cheap $60 or under routers.  Although, QoS won't let you limit their speeds it will let you give p2p applications less priority than other applications.

you could try to limit their time connection through the router, assign static ips to their mac addresses and only let them connect at night or when you know you wont be using internet. im pretty sure they will get the message that way and limit their bittorrent downloads.

Don't change these.
