How do I get an ftp site?

Name: Anonymous 2009-12-18 17:22

you can set up your own site on your comp using the opera web browser, it has an ftp client built in. search for opera unite file sharing.

 can you for me?

are you 12 and what is this?

go to opera.com download and install opera 10.10 then follow the instructions on how to setup file sharing.

all you have to do is make an account on myopera.com and then give a folder you want to share on your comp to opera and voila! you have an ftp site. then you give the address to people who want to download shit from you (along with the password if you didnt make the site public)

also google is your friend.

FTP sounds great ; why isnt it used more instead of p2p ?

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-06 21:38

I don't know, maybe because its easier to look shit up on a p2p program rather than search the net?

It's not very efficient, I'd imagine.

You'll find it's more efficient, in some ways.

p2p spreads the hosting, with no server neccesary.
ftp uses a client-server model.

ftp is a direct transfer, it goes as fast as your connection can go, whereas p2p/torrents rely on everyone elses available bandwidth.

Atimusk, what's the password for the books?

Yeah, but FTP is (usually) setup on a central server and if there's many connections, especially on a small home-style hookup it can get rather slow. Certain p2p protocols like BitTorrent break up this process and distributes it over different clients. This works great if it's popular. The biggest reason why Linux and BSD distributors recommend using BitTorrent these days rather than downloading from their main FTP site, or a local mirror.
