Does anyone know the exact reason the main drive letter for Microsoft back since DOS has been C? Is it a joke like how C++ is one better than C? Or C# is one better than C++? I started thinking about this today. Does anyone know?

A and B are reserved for floppy.

Yes, but that still doesn't explain why C. The main drive could have been A and the floppies B and C.

You only had floppies in the beginning.

Drive letters originated with CP/M and DOS was based CP/M. Plus, what the others have said; back then hard drives were huge and very expensive, some filled an entire room, the first PCs came with 1 or 2 floppy drives.

They are ordered by the old bootstrapping priority list.
