Connecting to a machine at home

I want to build a dedicated machine at home that would allow me to connect to it wherever I am as long as the Internet is up at home. I want to be able to navigate the machine like remote desktop but much more secure. Do I use something like openssh, openvpn, or would realvnc be enough?
