Linux on an old PC

My parents have a very old computer that runs very slowly.  I want to install Linux to boost the speed.  What distro can you guys recommend?

Dell Dimension XPS D233
233MHz Intel Pentium II
384MB RAM
6GB hardrive
Floppy, CD drive (no DVD drive)

The distro's not as important as the software.  You'll be able to run the base system and X well enough on that box, but a lot of the fancy new software (e.g., recent versions of GNOME or KDE) isn't going to work.  Just choose some lightweight software, and you'll be fine.

When I last had a box with specs like that, I was running Debian "Potato" (2.2) with GNOME 1.4, and that worked pretty well.
