I'm trying to burn a .avi onto a DVD for play in a DVD player, and I'm unsure of how to go about it.
Anybody able to walk me through it?

Any burning program (I use a free one called BurnAware) will work, if the AVI's are already compatible with your DVD player. Look for DivX support in the manual if you didn't already know. DivX and XviD essentially the same too, by the way. So just burn the AVI's as data in that case. Works well for TV shows you get from torrents, as an example.
If you need to convert them to MPEG-2, the standard DVD format, that's only necessary when you need it to play on any regular (read: old) DVD player. And by doing so you'll fuck up the quality. That's a last resort, and I hope that's not what you were planning to do.

most DVD players these days play AVI files straight off the bat, just burn any avi and try playing, if it doesn't work then do as >>5 says
