Head Mounted Displays

Has anyone used any HMD for computer gaming? Are they worth investing in? What are they like? Are the screens transparent, so that you can see whatever is on the other side of them? Which ones right now (or latter on in the future) would be worth obtaining?

I have an inbuild chip, so I have a HUD. It's like a HMD without the physical weight of the unit.
