Win XP can't reach DHCP server

Name: Anonymous 2008-06-15 14:56

Hey /comp/.  For the past 3 weeks, the internet on my sis's comp stopped working and the parents told me to fix it... Anyways I went to all the usual suspects - plugged in, turn off firewalls, reset modem.  nothing works.  So, thinking its the Ethernet card, I put a new one in, still no luck.  So now I figure something's actually wrong so I open cmd.exe and type the following commands: ipconfig /all, ipconfig /release, and then ipconfig /renew.  All to no avail.  It tells me that while trying to renew the IP address, it is unable to reach the DHCP server.  I unplug the coaxial cable and run ipconfig /all again.  When the cable is unplugged, my address should be going to 192.xx... or 00.00... something, but it isn't.It's still stuck at the AIPA 169.254.xxx...  I already tried resetting winsock, uninstalling all firewall software and downloading the hot fixes from Microsoft.  I'm still SOL.  The network seems fine, considering 3 other comps in my house are using it without trouble.  Yes, I already turned on autodetect on the DNS and TCP protocols in the connection settings.  Still SOL.  I'm not the dumbest kid on the block, but I'm out of ideas.  What does anon suggest?

coaxial cable
What the fuck. Are you still using 10Base2 or something?

When the cable is unplugged, my address should be going to 192.xx
No, actually in that case Windows defaults to those 169.x addresses, unless you've configured a static address. 192.x would indicate a successful DHCP lease.

Try booting some OS from a live CD and see if it's able to receive an IP address.

Taking a look at the logs of the DHCP server would also be helpful but my guess is that you have some cheap DSL router and that's out of the question..?

One of my computers does this. I set it to an IP address outside of the DHCP server IP range and that got it working again.

Replace the network cable.

Install Opera, because of it's stability and economical resource usage it is a much better option for use with your internet browsing needs
