A few days ago I had my 80GB 6G in my bag and a bottle of water in another compartment. My iPod was still running while a leak in the bottle slowly soaked everything in my bag. I have no clue as to how long it was underwater but I turned it off the second I saw it drenched in water. Luckily my calculator only got water on the outside and most of my papers were on my desk. My Audio Technica can still work too.
I let it dry for two days and turned it on today. It showed the reset screen with the Apple logo but then moved to the screen with n 'X' logo on it and the url for Apple support.I ran the diagnostic tests and everything is running fine except for the hard disk and I can't get into disk mode so i assume that the hard disk is fucked.
As far as I know hard disks are pretty much sealed so I'm not sure if there's actual damage to the platter.
I don't want to have to buy another disk if I can get away with it. I heard that denatured alcohol removes mineral deposits and evaporates leaving no trace.
If I soak it in denatured alcohol and let it dry do you think that apple tech will write it off as a hard disk failure and fix it for free? If not then how much do you think repairing it will cost?
If repair is close enough to getting a 5.5G I'll go for that because there are so many mods.
