WTF???

My explorer.exe has gone insane. First off it's no longer automatic. So I start off with no taskbar or start menu. When I make it run the only thing that comes up is my documents. My icons are all still there and besides the missing taskbar and start menu everything seems to be fine. I've tried running spybot and ccleaner. I've also tried SFC /scannow. Nothing seems to be getting my comp back to normal. Help me please.

I just discovered that for some reason I can't copy and paste either.

Assuming XP.

If you can do a repair install with a bootable XP CD, that's not so bad. Doesn't fuck up your registry like a reinstall, leaves all your installed programs intact and working. All it really does is replace everything in C:/WINDOWS with what's on the Windows CD, which means all your data's still there, all programs are still there, most registry keys seem to still be there. You'll have to get all Windows Updates over again, but that's not so bad.

And yeh, if you do have to reinstall, I advise doing it, hooking up an external drive long enough to get just your data off, and doing a complete reformat. If you just reinstall, be prepared for massive headaches trying to uninstall/reinstall programs, etc. Might as well just do a format and really start clean.
