Harddisk about to die =(

Name: Anonymous 2008-01-07 5:08

Hi all,
got a big problem, one of my hdds is about to die. Why I know? Well it is part of a Raid 0 and when I booted my PC 5 days ago it said "Error Occured (0)" for one of the two. Well, I did some research on the web, and found out that the drive won't make it much longer.
Though there are some differences in my case. First of all its a relative new one, I would say like 4 or 5 months old, so I don't really understand why it happened, it is also cooled very well. Another difference to the other cases is, my PC didn't crash because of the hdd yet, I can boot and work normally, its just this message so far, and sometimes some weired sounds, but they aren't loud and only occasionally.

OK, now about my question. Since it seems that I still can read everything on it, is it possible to buy another hdd (same company/size of cause) and make an exact copy of it, so that I can keep my Raid as it is and can keep working on my PC while I sent my broken hdd to repair? If it is possible, how do I do that? A problem I thought about with an exact copy, would the error occur on booting again with the copy because I also copied some errors and the raid wouldn't be sync again maybe?

So yeah, thats about it. Would be awesome if anyone could help me with that. Thx alot.

Stop using RAID-0

lol why? that would mean 1/2 loading speed, 1/2 copying speed ... meh w/e seems not one here knows how do backup like I wanted, so I have backup regularly and then work without raid 0, at least till I get my repaired hdd back.

Buy another disk and make a RAID-5.

To back it up now, boot a livecd and in a console type «dd if=/dev/dying_disk of=/dev/new_disk» where dying and new disk probably is something like sdb or sdc.

Thx for the reply! But could you plz explain what you just said, a little more detailed?
What hdd I would need for that? A 640GB one? At least that is what it would take to mirror everything. I thought it takes 4 hdds of the same kind for Raid5. Or is making a Raid5 with only 3 hdds the thing I asked in the first place? And about the console synthax, is that supposed to work with a Linux bash?

I wouldn't use dd to copy a drive that is part of a RAID array, especially if you want to build another kind of RAID (5 instead of 0). tar is probably safer. If you want to continue using RAID 0 and just replace the failing drive, you can try dd. Tell us if it worked.

Ok I will, but first I got to get a new hdd. I so hope this works, don't want to loose all my beloved animes, mangas, music and the 15GB pics I collected from 4chan, this collection couldn't be replaced ever ; ;

Just to be sure, this dd command works under linux right? I know that linux list all devices as hda, hdb... though I'm not a linux pro, how do I find out which harddisk is which?

Oh and thx alot for the replys kind anons!!

Well that's another problem with this approach. How did you set up your RAID array? Are you using a hardware RAID controller or some kind of software RAID? What kind/company/model, etc?

Board: ASUS P5B Delux

This board got two raid controller. I use the following:

Controller: Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager

The chip is called ICH8R as far as I know.

My system is on a WD 10000rpm hdd in nonraid.

Programs and all my precious data is on 2 320GB Samsung HD321KJ 7200rpm 16MB hdds.

I hope thats enough information~

That's certainly enough information. However I don't know anything about that particular RAID controller. The main problem is, how does the RAID array behave under Linux? Will it transparently show up as a single drive or will you see the individual hard drives? You'll have to get that information from the vendor or their forums.
