XP crashes when previewing images

Name: Anonymous 2008-01-02 12:11

a fully updated windows xp sp2 system constantly crashes when i scroll through the Images directory in the users documents

it does NOT crash like this when scrolling through the same dir in safe mode, even though safe mode also shows previews of all the images, this makes me hope i can disable some media feature in xp to stop the problem

i don't know much about windows but i've tried turning off caching of preview-images, turned on the visibility of all hidden files, folders and systemfiles, and even tried turning off all those functions in media player that fetch info from the internets about media files

i'm out of ideas but i am going to scan the computer with clamwin and check out weird processes now and see if i find something, because the owner is not very good at computers and has a history of clicking on stuff in dialogues and e-mails

You could have saved yourself a lot of time and trouble by simply reinstalling Windows in the first place...

naw i can't do that but i did find some more info on this after i posted the thread

since i don't use windows much i had to ask around and found out bsod was TURNED OFF, the bsod gave me info about which file was causing the crash and it turns out i have an old driver for an intel graphics card

this old driver is known to crash when scrolling through large image directories, so i found a more recent version on compaq's webpage, hidden under win2k even though it said for xp to, fgts

so anyways i found this on teh webernets to
>This DLL (all versions tried) will blue-screen Windows 2003 from explorer.exe when scrolling large image directory in thumbnail view. Newer versions (3198) seem to crash less often, but no version has worked. MB is Intel D815EEA. DRAM is 512MB.

the one on compaq's webpage was a lower version than 3198, i did find 3198 but on driverskit which is a third-party webpage that i dunno if i can trust, even though the file had no viruses according to clamwin

but fuck all that, i'm going home in a few hours so i told my mom to reboot the computer after clamwin finishes and the new intel driver from compaq will be installed

Dammit, did moot link the text boards on the main page? I was enjoying not having these threads.

It could be a problem with one of the Windows services, they corrupt from time to time. No real way to fix it besides reinstalling, but if you narrow it down to which you can turn it off. (Run services.msc)

Well if it's a faulty driver, bother the manufacturer.

Amazing, what kind of shit gets released to the general public.
