Dear 4chan,

I just installed ubuntu alongside XP on my laptop, cause I wanted to see what all the fuss about linux is. It's quite nice, but what should I use to listen to/catalog my mp3s?

Any other must have apps/things I should do? Also, i've done nothing in the way of firewalling/general internet protection. I dunno what comes turned on as standard but should I be doing stuff to beef up internet related security before I get raped? Have a hardware firewall on the router, but had always backed it up with something like Comodo in the past when on Windows.

Um, thanks :)

If you like stuff like iTunes, give Amarok a try. If you prefer WinAmp, try XMMS or Audacious. There are also lots of others.

For other stuff:

As for security, turning off services you don't need would be a good start. I don't know what Ubuntu enables by default but ssh is probably among them. Disable it if you don't need it. Find out what serviced get started and determine if you absolutely need them. If not, disable them.

As for firewalling, read up on iptables. Also, if you do need some services, you can most likely harden them. Restrict access to certain interfaces, IP-addresses or -ranges, use TCP-wrappers and so on. Security is a very exhaustive topic.

MPD + Sonata for music,
Mplayer for video.

Firestarter is a good GUI iptables configuration tool if pure iptables rule tinkering seems confusing for start.

xmms for audio
mplayer for video

vlc for nothing because it fucking sucks.

If you want something to catalog your MP3s, try the MOTHERFUCKING FILE SYSTEM, as keeping track of files is what it's fucking for. I really don't understand why faggots want their MP3 playing software to add another layer of bullshit to the process.
