I wanna be able to download tons of stuff more, so I need new hard drives. They could be an array on my current gaming desktop or they could be put in my old one, which is currently collecting dust, along with new quiet fans and underclock for less power for 24/7 use. Should I pay for Usenet or host and store torrents from another machine for no subscription but with a larger initial investment?
What have you done with your old machines?

My old Pentium 100 MMX has been restocked with 184 MB RAM about 4 years ago. It's now my router, firewall, proxy, mail server and infrastructure server (DNS, DHCP, that kind of stuff).
I've put some serious though in investing into some kind of storage so that I can leave a torrent client running on it as well. I'm just not sure what the best solution would be in my case. Probably some kind of external storage in combination with ATA/SCSI over IP. Hmm... I just don't know. Also needs moar RAM.
So yeah, in your situation I'd do that. Your machine is probably much better suited to run a torrent client 24/7 than mine as well.

$15/mo unlimited Usenet + cheap money for nzb subscription - wouldn't that be a LOT less money than colo'ing a box from both initial investment and monthly service charges?
