Should I try Ubuntu?

Name: Anonymous 2007-11-24 2:22

So.

I'm having a lot of problems with my OS (Windows XP SP2).

I'm srsly hitting my boiling point here.

I have like years thinking about Linux as my main OS but I'm really used to it to some Windows programs but this is the best excuse so far for me to try Linux.

Depends.

Do you play games often? If yes, do research if the games you like run with Wine.

What programs do you use, apart from common things like browser or email client? Do research if there are replacements for those on Linux and if they are stable/user friendly.

And most importantly: Get a fucking book or comprehensive website and read up on how Linux works. Learn to use the shell. Learn about how the file system is structured. Learn about /proc, /dev, /sys and so on. Learn as much as you can before you first install it.

Ubanto is notorious for hiding all these important aspects from the user. But the last thing we need is another moron who thinks it's cool to use Linux without knowing shit about it. And it would be a frustrating experience for you as well.

1. Linux is great if you don't depend on anything proprietary. This would include games, other various programs, computing hardware, and file formats and protocols.
2. Linux is great if you are willing to spend a bit of time, effort or even money to learn about the ways of a system that is not Windows.
3. Go read the dozens of Linux and Ubuntu books that are around.
4. Dual boot Windows and Ubuntu. Ya rly. There's little reason why you can't have both on your computer.
5. Whenever you can, try to look past the hype.

I recommend switching to linux slowly.  Dual boot so if you can't do something in linux, you still have your confort of windows.  Eventually, once you get familiar with Linux, you will realize that you can do all the same things in Linux, you just have to find a way how.

Then, one day, you will realize how little you use Windows, and repartition your drive to get some free space for Linux.

Just make sure that if you do gaming, that you can either drop a few games or run it through Wine/VMWare

Enjoy having incompatible hardware.

Even if something works for someone else on Wine, it won't work for you.

But you don't learn anything about linux really.

Name: Anonymous 2007-12-01 16:01

Install Ubuntu because it's easy to learn on, beside they have better updates. Also you can install Wine HQ to run your Windows Appz: Steam, Office, and so on - Takes a little tweaking but it will work.

The command line is still there if you want to use it. You just don't have to.

But you don't LEARN anything, since there's a (broken) GUI app for everything.

Name: Anonymous 2007-12-02 16:48

A few years ago I only used Windows. I decided I would give Linux a try, so I dual booted a linux distro and windows on my laptop. I tried to use Linux whenever possible, but had the option to fall back on windows if I could not figure something out. Enough tinkering and playing around, and you will be using Linux in no time. Now none of my computers have windows on it. Just be patient and be willing to play around.

Not trying to bash Ubuntu, but it isn't all that good.

The fact that you don't have to learn anything doesn't mean you have to not learn anything, dipshit.

I use it as my main OS right now, and I agree. It's bloated as fuck, and one of the shittier mainstream Linuxen out there. Which is odd, since Debian is pretty solid.
Still, it's much, much better than any Windows OS, and easy enough to figure out even for people who are afraid of the command line.

Wut? They take a snapshot of Sid, package everything, work out the bugs and work in some polish.
