Suggestions on new graphics card

Name: Anonymous 2007-11-19 11:09

As the title would hopefully indicate, I need a new graphics card, and require assistance in choosing one from newegg. I'm looking for a good one under $400.

Are there any really superior cards? 'Cause looking at them I see a number of 'em that seem to do the exact same fucking thing with no listed difference.

...also I need someone to explain to me how I can find out wether or not my current graphics card [geforce 420 mx] uses PCI-E or AGP. Because I am an idiot.

A good card would be the 8800GT. It performs on par with the GTX (starts drifting farther back on higher resolutions) and blows the GTS 320mb/640mb ones away.

For 300 bucks, it's a great deal.

Too bad it's out of stock everywhere >.<

As for your current graphics card, it's an AGP. You'll need a motherboard that supports PCI-E to use the good stuff.

Alternatively, if your motherboard doesn't support PCI-E (which is a pretty good bet if you're using an AGP card), you could keep what you have and go for the Radeon X1950 XT, which is the best card you can get in AGP.

At $260, it is a bit of a tough pill to swallow for a dying interface. I would only recommend the X1950 XT AGP to someone with a very fast AGP system who already has a power supply with enough juice to handle it.

It must be noted, however, that if you have $260 to spend on an AGP card-and possibly an extra $100 for a power supply that can handle it, you may be much better off purchasing a PCI-Express motherboard and card.

PCI express graphics cards are cheaper than their AGP cousins. If you upgrade your system to PCI-E and sell your old components, you may actually spend a similar amount of money compared to buying an expensive AGP card alone.

Does it matter if the motherboard uses PCI elsewhere?

I mean, my motherboard connects to my harddrive via a PCI; would that mean the entire board supports PCI [as in, universally or whatever]

...Why are AGP's more expensive, considering that they're older? I'd have thought that would be the other way around

Wait for a DirectX 10.1 generation cards, or buy the new Radeon now, it performs a bit worse than a 8800GT but it supports dx 10.1.

why wait for dx10.1??? no games support it as yet, and u can only use it if u have vista.

Just go for the 8800GT, u may need a new motherboard, so wait until next year, then get a new mobo, and probably a nice new 45nm  cpu from intel too.
