PC Magazine "Bang for your Buck" PC

PC Magazine just had a feature where they listed a number of components for the most up-to-date PC at the lowest price. I'm not much of a tech guy, so I want to know your thoughts on this:

I'm thinking about building this, but I'd like to get some different takes on it other than the ones presented by the writer of the article. Some details:
1. I plan on using it for gaming. How good is this set-up for that?
2. Are there any components you suggest I replace?
3. Is a laser mouse a good investment? Last time I checked, they were still kinda buggy...
4. Oh lawd, please don't start an OS war.

Anything in a magazine, such as pc-world is pure propaganda..as their paid to advertise..not caring what the consumer gets. Until you understand that, and that Vista sucks you will get no help from us.

think before you just buy the biggest monitor in the world.. resolution > size

Get a cheaper dvd burner.. make sure it has lightscribe.. should be about $30.. make sure it is SATA

bout the OS, i would go with Windows XP. XP>Vista>ME though linux>xp>vista>me in my opinion. if you wernt a gamer, i would recomend linux

Yeah. A 14'' monitor is more than enough. Just make sure it can do 2400x1800 pixels. Who cares if you can read anything as long as the resolution is as high as possible.

What kind of a nigger pays $109 for a case? The price of the case should be negligable compared to the price of the entire machine.

Also, if you pay anything but a negative amount of money for Vista, you're being ripped off. If you're too much of a pussy to run Linux (and run your games under Wine, if you must), get XP, as per >>5.
If you're used to XP, more of your old apps will work under Wine than under Vista anyway, and depending on the distro you choose, it'll be more natural to use than Vista as well.

Since we're being accurate here, which random DE are you talking about? As far as I know managing fonts and dpi in Linux is a fucking pain with most distributions. And that's not a problem of some DE but rather of XFree/xorg. Which is still the only solution for a graphical user interface on Linux, correct me if I'm wrong.

You could use VMWare in shell to get Windows XP if you want an alternative to xorg.

from what i read on the OP...

don't buy a fucking $109 case. flames on the side and blue LED's dont improve performance, get one for $30.

and you can find cheaper monitor's than $315.
20" widescreen 8ms lcd's go for mid $200's

pass on the sound card and wtf? a media reader? no. just no.
