Need new processor + vid card = get new comp?

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-30 11:22

Would I be better off getting a whole new comp, or just buying a new processor and vid card?

Also, would I need to buy a new motherboard?

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-30 14:11

Yes.

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-30 14:57

better off getting a new comp yes?

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-30 16:24

Yes.

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-30 16:25

No.. wtf?

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-30 16:42

Maybe.

Depends on what you mean by "new comp".

"new comp" as in "whole new computer". I got this comp in 03, basically everything on it is outdated.

If you got it in '03 the only thing that's likely to be outdated is the video card.
But still, "whole new computer" doesn't answer the question. Do you, for example, consider a monitor to be part of that? Because that's a significant cost that most intelligent people wouldn't consider to be part of the computer itself.

Point made.

I've got a pentium 4 processor. 2.5 ghz. I'm under the impression I need to update this, right

no not really i use a 2ghz and i do fine

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-31 16:07

2.5 GHz is still more than adequate, even for gaming.

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-31 19:00

your computer won't work without a motherboard so yes, you should get one.

Name: Anonymous 2007-11-04 18:28

get an e4300 then OC it too +/- .2GHZ  3.2Ghz

Name: Anonymous 2007-11-04 20:36

>>15
There's no appreciable difference between 3 GHz and 3.2 GHz for common desktop applications, including gaming. GTFO.

benchmarking Pie with a core 2 duo/quad with the same speed would disagree with you

Name: Anonymous 2007-11-05 7:29

>>17
The difference is not noticeable for common desktop applications, including gaming. For games, it may only mean about 5fps increase.

Not even. The video card is far more important nowadays.

Name: Anonymous 2007-11-09 10:44

the REAL question is what motherboard do you have? That decides whether you can/need to upgrade

Name: Anonymous89 2007-11-12 23:59

Get a new computer and put linux on your old machine.

Name: Anonymous 2007-11-13 0:39

Get a new computer, put BSD on your old machine and GNU/Linux on your new one.

Put BSD on both machines.

Hey I have a similar question to OP but I actually have the pertinent information for it.

So I wanted to get some opinion's on the bottleneck/s in this system. I'm trying to play Oblivion which is ok until I get into a fight and everything slows down so much that I die.

Sempron 2400 overclocked at 1780, 512MB GeForce7600GS overclocked at 518/784 core/memory (recommended overclock by the nvidia utility), 1280MB DDR266. MB is ASRock K7VM3 if you're wondering.

I don't want to buy anymore parts, but do you think I could overclock the CPU more and would that be the main problem? Or is single-core CPU and DDR just so outdated that it's hopeless?

Also the BIOS has a setting for AGP(yeah it's 4X AGP :() aperture max is 256MB does that mean I'm only getting half of the video memory??

Also I try and defragment my drives cause I think it always slows down when it's accessing files, but it always goes for like 10 minutes and says "some files could not be defragmented" and gives up.

Any of these questions answered would be appreciated.

>Or is single-core CPU and DDR just so outdated that it's hopeless?

yes, especially since you dont even have good ddr or a good cpu from when they were new

>Also the BIOS has a setting for AGP(yeah it's 4X AGP :() aperture max is 256MB does that mean I'm only getting half of the video memory??

agp should be 8x (maybe your card/motherboard is terrible), and aperture is system ram that can be shared with the card

>Also I try and defragment my drives cause I think it always slows down when it's accessing files, but it always goes for like 10 minutes and says "some files could not be defragmented" and gives up.

hard drives are the worst bottleneck in any computer using them (even with a solidstate drive).  if you have a decent defragger and enough free space for it to work properly, then its probably not going to get much better.

your comp isnt a total piece of crap but it sounds like its barely meeting minimum requirements or something (at least for newer games).

Aww Fuck It. Lets all put Linux or BSD on every PC.
