Hi, people who don't use Windows!

Name: Anonymous 2007-09-18 0:37 ID:ibBSocBy

Why do you do it? For programming needs?
But aren't there a lot of cool things you can't do without Windows?

Name: Anonymous 2007-09-18 0:50 ID:Kn9j3k1D

I use OSX because I need a machine to develop on (i.e.: unix-based), but not sinfully ugly like Linux.

It's not ideal or anything, but it does the job.

I'm a GNAA/Hippy so I only use Freebsd

I use Linux because it's awesome for server and routing usage.  No graphic card or subsystem needed.

No, there's a lot of cool stuff I can't do with Windows.

Linux is free, open-source, uses less resources than Windows or OS X, and, among other things, has quite a lot of free programs which are nice. It's much more stable and reliable too, and since less than 1% of all people use Linux there aren't many viruses developed for it. And with Gnome's "sudo" it's impossible to have something drastic changed without the user's specific permission. And the reason why Linux-based operating systems are free is because IBM funds developers so the whole "you get what you pay for" thing doesn't apply here.

But aren't there a lot of cool things you can't do without Windows?
No, there are not. If I want to play a game or something I can always just run a virtual machine or emulator to use it. And everything else is good.

If you want to use Windows, OS X, BSD, Solaris, or whatever else, that's fine, as long as you don't try to tell why me the operating system you use is superior to the one I use. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages. Just leave it at that.

slow down there zippy, you're moving too fast
Linux is free, open-source, uses less resources than Windows or OS X
The X.Org X11 implementation doesn't use less resources than Quartz or GDI. Most users don't require the distributed processing aspect that X provides.

It's much more stable and reliable too
XP has been pretty stable and reliable for ages too. I would say Linux is equally stable and reliable than any well maintained XP machine.

If I want to play a game or something I can always just run a virtual machine or emulator to use it.
Virtual machines have to go through many layers of cruft before they even get to the virtual operating system. You can't run many interactive 3d games well in a virtual machine.

I don't want to start a holy war here, but what is the deal with you Mac fanatics? I've been sitting here at my freelance gig in front of a Mac (a 8600/300 w/64 Megs of RAM) for about 20 minutes now while it attempts to copy a 17 Meg file from one folder on the hard drive to another folder. 20 minutes. At home, on my Pentium Pro 200 running NT 4, which by all standards should be a lot slower than this Mac, the same operation would take about 2 minutes. If that.

In addition, during this file transfer, Netscape will not work. And everything else has ground to a halt. Even BBEdit Lite is straining to keep up as I type this.

I won't bore you with the laundry list of other problems that I've encountered while working on various Macs, but suffice it to say there have been many, not the least of which is I've never seen a Mac that has run faster than its Wintel counterpart, despite the Macs' faster chip architecture. My 486/66 with 8 megs of ram runs faster than this 300 mhz machine at times. From a productivity standpoint, I don't get how people can claim that the Macintosh is a superior machine.

Mac addicts, flame me if you'd like, but I'd rather hear some intelligent reasons why anyone would choose to use a Mac over other faster, cheaper, more stable systems.

>well maintained XP machine
And how many well maintained XP machines do you know? The thing is, Unix in general highly encourages and simplifies keeping one's system clean and well maintained. Software installations are neatly seperated from the OS itself and you can do almost any kind of work without needing super user access or needing to tamper with any operating system components.

On Windows... well, there are reasons why so many people still work with administrator accounts all the time. It's a fucking pain otherwise. And even today one installation of a piece of software can crash your system or at least make it unstable (registry, system32, etc). It's ridiculous how much effort is put into confining the huge mistakes they made when designing Windows. Look at Vista's all new fancy security features, UAC, various system file recovery facilities and all that shit.

Most, if not all Unix systems run longer and more stable without any of those, given a reasonably intelligent administrator (not giving away super user passwords, etc). To reach that level with Windows you'd have to restrict a user's access so badly he wouldn't be able to get any work done. As for me, I'll just run linux, install vmware, show our guys how to use the snapshot feature and we're fine.

I'm sick of this "just get more ram!" bullshit. My 286 did almost as much functionality-wise as my current multi-ghz machine. Yeah, really. Sure, there was no multi-tasking, but I did the mostly the same things as I do today.
Hello, fuckers, just because you can eat ram doesn't mean you should. It costs money and also reduces the number of programs you can run.
I can see it now: in another ten years programs will have minimum footprint of 1GB, but they'll just do more of the same

I know what you wrote. That part is fine but it still doesn't make the rest of your other statements accurate. Linux is great but your statements could use a little less romanticizing.

I know a lot of well maintained XPs. I also know of plenty of unmaintained XPs. Before I became a free software partisan, I had a well maintained XP system.

The problem of general system stability and security lies on the users and system design. Give clueless users root access to Unix and I will guarantee you that their systems will become as messed up as their windows systems - they just don't know what they need to know to keep their systems well. These users will always find a way to make things go bad and I can guarantee that this can happen with a system as beautiful as the Hurd.

One reason why Unix has a reputation of being secure is because of the admins of these machines keep it secure. Give the clueless these machines and they will fall like the rest of them.

Hi, who don't use a good os(anything but windows)!

Why don't you use a good os? Anything but windows is secure functional and did I say secure?

I hate windows, I used it for several years, then I tried ubuntu, nowadays my favourite OS is freeBSD.

I have tried MAC OSX, but I didn't like it.

When I tried ubuntu for the first time, it was quite confusing, but when I got few thing sorted out, I noticed it was A LOT better than the crappy-piece-of-shit windows XP I had before.

Some of it's users are dangerously Windows-user-like. That's a vast disadvantage.

I am a new freebsd convert faggot.

Linux was just too scattered and non-standardized . Any dill-hole that can open a text editor can program for linux. In my  experience it took forever to get some dumbass library for an app, compile, then have it not work for some stupid reason. Any dill-hole that can open a text editor can also program for bsd, but only the working standardized stuff makes it in the release.

As for windows, I love games so i have to keep the XP machine running.

Much of what you say is true, sadly. I also hated those things until gentoo was made. Now I've been having the best of both worlds. Awesome package management that has partly been borrowed from BSD and all the great software that is available for linux without the trouble of trying to get it to run right on BSD.
