hard drive not letting me partition

Name: Anonymous 2007-09-15 21:18 ID:7YgDnq9k

hey all.

i have windows vista ultimate.

so today i was going to install ubuntu on my computer.

so i went to computer management, and right-clicked my C: drive, went to the 'shrink volume' option and..... it wouldnt let me shrink it! i only have one other partition, and its a small 7.04GB partition used for my backups. i cant make anymore partitions off of my C: drive anymore, so i tried making one off of my backup partition and it let me do it!! what the fuck? is this microcock trying to rip me off?

Welcome to the internet.

Try just using a different partition editor? Gparted on a boot disk works fine, and should let you re-partition it.

How big is the partition you tried to shrink and how much of it is already in use? NTFS stores data and metadata all over the partition as opposed to FAT, which can make it difficult to resize a partition that is already fairly full.

Otherwise I agree with >>2

yeah well it was forced on me (and i have no real intentions of changing that for a few weeks)

anyways the only other partition is a D: partition thats about 7gb, i use it for backups and stuff.

i tried to shrink my C: which is waht youre supposed to do to make new partitions. but it gives me some lameass window that wont let me make another partition.

well the partition in question is my C: drive.

its about 150GB big, i will provide you with a url for the pic.

here it is: http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=4zkmr2p&s=1

help? i want to use linux and/or xp on my computer...

Well you managed to avoid answering my question of how much free space is on your C partition quite elaborately. The information is even covered in your screenshot. Lol.

Anyways, it looks like you have only tried shrinking the partition with the Windows tool. Try shrinking it with the tool that comes on your favorite linux install CD or live CD. Maybe that will work.

Fucking idiots.

Do NOT try to shrink the partition from gParted or your install disk.  If Vista isn't resized by itself, it will crap out and you will need to reinstall.  Windoze is gay like that.

tl;dr: Find a way to do it in Windoze if you don't want problems
