Computer wont boot up

Name: Anonymous 2007-09-10 20:14 ID:SErKTUr8

I can get as the first screen that shows my motherboard brand. Then it freezes up and I cant get anywhere, not even the BIOS. I had this problem yesterday but all I had to do was put the RAM in different slots and it booted up again. But earlier today I reset my computer to update software and I have the same problem. I switched the RAM around again but I think all my ports are dead. Is that actually the problem or is it something else? And can I fix the problem?

Clear CMOS, set RAM timings manually if need be.

run memtest. if each module passes, it's bad mobo chip so rma the board

Please elaborate, what is memtest, what is a mobo chip, and what does rma mean? I never come to this board.

MemTest86 is a program to test your computer's RAM. As in: If you can't get past the splash screen, you won't be able to run MemTest86.

A mobo chip is short for motherboard chip. Used such as: If it's not the RAM, it's likely a mobo chip that has bitten the dust.

RMA stands for Return Merchandise Authorization. As in: If the computer is still under store warrenty return it to the store. If not, get a hold of the manufacturer of the computer to get it RMA'd.

Ok, thanks for explaining. You're right, I cant run Memtest since I cant get to my desktop. And Abit stopped producing my motherboard in 2003, so I doubt I can return it. I think Im going to try using Memtest with this computer to test the RAM, just to make sure. Im almost positive its the slots though.

You need to reinstall windows to get rid of all the viruses

Name: Anonymous 2007-09-10 23:17 ID:cxIYdFJl

you run memtest by booting it from a cd

Is there any way to repair the ram slots?

My best guess is you've lost your north bridge on your motherboard chipset. Its time to upgrade anyway. You've got many more options now, and you never know when you could frankenputer your old parts into a closet-server.

I'm sick of this "just get more ram!" bullshit. My 286 did almost as much functionality-wise as my current multi-ghz machine. Yeah, really. Sure, there was no multi-tasking, but I did the mostly the same things as I do today.
Hello, fuckers, just because you can eat ram doesn't mean you should. It costs money and also reduces the number of programs you can run.
I can see it now: in another ten years programs will have minimum footprint of 1GB, but they'll just do more of the same

Well, just use DOS 5.0 again. No one is stopping you.

Don't change these.
