Vista and Routers

Name: Anonymous 2007-09-09 17:37 ID:MRN3uZDO

My modem/router (extra LAN ports) has two things connected to it. My roommate's comptuer with Windows Vista and another router. The second router has my own XP computer connected to it, aswell as my Xbox, though I'm sure the Xbox has nothing to do with my problem.

The problem is, it seems as though the Vista computer tries to connect through the internet through my router, not the modem it's directly connected to. Under the Network settings or whatever, it says it's connected to Network 2.

The only way I can get it to switch to Network 1 is to disable my local area connection on the vista computer, disconnect my router from the modem, and the enable local area connection so it has no choice but to connect to the internet through the modem. Then I connect the router back to it so both computers have internet.

However, it switches back to Network 2 if you were to change usernames on the vista computer, or apparently for no reason. It has switched networks in the middle of web surfing a few times.

I use an extra router because my computer is far away from the modem and I want my Xbox to have internet access aswell.

How can I make it so the Vista computer never switches to the non-working Network 2? I've tried deleting it from the list of networks available but it just recognizes it after a while and switches again. Once it does switch to Network 2, there's no other way to switch it back unless I do what I explained above.

Someone pleaase help me out, not interested in Linux either.

Hey dumb-shit, try using a switch instead of a router.

Probably would be easier to fix the problem instead of spend money on a switch.

I know Vista sucks but does anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Try the Home Network Setup wizard. It gives you the option to choose the proper network adapter to connect to the internet with.

Don't change these.
