is it better to disable file indexing on XP or should i keep it enabled?  Doesn't file indexing take up space or something like that...

It depends.  If you have P4 and lots of disk space, I wouldn't worry about it.  If you have a laboring P2 or P3 or Celeron (note: I use a Celeron-based computer now), and/or your free disk space has dropped below 1GB, then you might experiment by turning it off.  I had to do a similar thing with the Windows 95 system that I used for years.  That indexer proved to be more trouble than it was worth, as the system aged, disk space declined, and a browser upgrade required more "oomph".
