Streaming video codec

I want to stream some video from a website.  Bandwidth isn't an issue, but what I'm wondering is what the highest possible resolution/bit rate that will play smoothly over a cable/dsl connection would be, and which codec(s) are recommended.  I'd like it to play properly on most people's computers without having to download a new codec.  Any thoughts?

DVD quality video: around 10Mbit/sec bandwidth

HD quality video: something like 43Mbits/sec??? (I could be wrong about that)

Average DSL: 1.5, 3Mbit/sec

Average Cable: 3, 6, 12Mbit/sec

Use MPEG-1 for max compatibility.

Don't change these.
