Ok. Any idea on where I can get a codec for mkv files that will allow them to be useable in windows movie maker.

You need whatever codec was used in compressing the video stream in that specific mkv container. Duh.

movie maker cant open MKV

you could use a program to Demux the mkv
depending on audio source, you will prob. need to re-encode
the audio to wav or mp3 then re-join the avi and audio in
Vdub, then open that new file in movie maker.

Maybe re-encode mkv to avi using SuperC?
Never tryed it myself.
