Need help

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-17 8:56 ID:fnvoiHOz

I have undetermined problem which makes me insane. My computer crashes during ALL games, including old 2d stuff. Sometimes even in some applications. Applications ranging from Itunes replacements like ephpod to rocket dock. This is NOT a software issue. The problem persisted even after full format and on freshly installed Windows. RAM modules are OK. HD is clean. No infections. CPU temp is normal.

The graphic card is NOT the problem; I tried several and the problem remained.
Here is the list on my hardware.

mobo: ASRock P4VT++
PSU: Codegen 300W (the problem remained even with an old Radeon 9000 with 64mb; don't think it's dying.)
CPU: Intel Celeron 2,4 Ghz
CPU fan: Zalman
RAM: 768mb, all modules are the same brand name/speed
HD: Hitachi Deskstar 80Gb
Card: ATI Radeon 9600 XT with the latest Omega drivers
OS: Win XP SP2

All drivers are installed; NOD32 is defending the machine.

Please help. I don't know what to do. Thank you for your time.

could be drivers or directx. reinstall both. remember, there is always the option to reinstall windows if all else fails.

Firstly, if the problem made you insane, then by rights we can't trust anything you've said.  However, in the communal spirit of this board, I'll ignore that for now.

Secondly, and seriously now, from your troubleshooting efforts you're going to have to start blaming the motherboard and/or processor.  Obviously either of those are big problems.  Getting a replacement processor is usual a pain, but you might consider obtaining one from eBay on a lark.  Replacing the mobo means that you may as well just build another computer from the new mobo and old parts.

Before engaging in such gyrations, you could set your hard drive aside and install another OS.  If XP doesn't seem to work on this machine, then borrow Vista and a spare 40GB drive from a friend, and load that up.  Obviously I'm only recommending that as an act of last resort before condemning the mobo.  Sorry, I don't see any other rational option.

Good luck.  Let us know how you're doing.  The worst that can happen is that somebody says "LOLPENIS".

OP here

Everything worked fine before the problems occured so Win XP isn't the problem.

I would say the motherboard might be the source of my torment. So, apart from my inability to attain Vista unless I torrent it, and borrowing a HD is out of the question because my friends would rather seperate themselfs from their limbs, I have to ask: are there any benchmark applications I can use to pinpoit the faulty component?

thx for the help :)

Have you tried not using the Omega drivers?

"Everything worked fine before the problems occured"

Give that man a genius award. lolpenis.

Yes. I've used ATI's drivers before. ATI Control Panel would refuse to start so I switched over to Omega.

You know, I think you're onto something here.  I missed a step.

1. Try the BIOS first, in case it has diags built in.

2. If not, try http://www.asrock.com/ to look for any diags.  Run them.

3. In either case, when you find a faulty area and you determine that you can live without it, either disable the component in the BIOS or do it in XP.

Let us know what happens.

Replace it with a $36 FSP Green 300 anyway.

And what tests did you run on your RAM to decide that it was fine?

RAM is second hand, but the problem began while I had 2x256 modules of another manufacturer.

....so you never tested either set but RAM gets an automatic free pass?  Sounds like you have empty squares on your checklist.  Memtest86+ nao.

Hardware troubleshooting by substitution doesn't work unless at least one part is known to be good.  You can't just play the odds on obvious things like RAM and move on to analyzing subtler potential failure points.

I'm sorry I've been delinquent. You guys do deserve to know what's happening, though.
We've been found out. Recently, she finally decided she was okay with sex. I made sure she was really ready, and told her that I didn't want to rush her into anything. She told me that she was ready, and was ready right then.
Guys, you know how much I love this girl. I couldn't possibly say no to her. We were so excited, that we made another mistake. We left the door open. Our mom liked by, and saw us having sex right there. Well, my mom got scared and said "you're moving with your aunte and uncle in Bel-Air"
I begged and pleaded with her day after day but she packed my suitcase and sent me on my way she gave me a kiss and then she gave me my ticket I put my walkman on and said I might as well kick it
First class, yo this is bad, drinking orange juice out of a champagne glass if this's what the people of Bel-Air livin' like, hmm this might be alright!
I whistled for a cab and when it came near the licenseplate said "Fresh" and had a dice in the mirror if anything I could say that this cab was rare but I thought now forget it, yo home to Bel-Air
I pulled up to the house about seven or eight and I yelled to the cabby "Yo homes smell you later!" looked at my kingdom I was finally there to sit on my throne as the prince of Bel-Air

Don't change these.
