What the fuck happened to my laptop

Name: Anonymous 2007-08-03 14:46 ID:7prfHUSL

I was running a new spyware blocker on my new laptop that I had for about a week. Gets rid of most, but the other two I had to restart for those to get deleted. So I do so. Now I can't get passed the Windows xp load screen. The laptop just shuts down just before I can put in my laptop. Did I get hit by a virus guys? If I did, will I have to take it into a shop or can I fix this?

You've just been owned.  Now install LEENUX!

reinstall xp if in doubt
you can set it so it boots the cd drive/dvd first so it loads the set up disc

could be a fault but if you want your shit working till you take back or dont want them seeing your CP at the shop then

Boot in safe mode
Open rededt32 / msconfig
Delete start ups
Reboot

Don't take it to the shop as they do the same or a complete format

I'll take the liberty of altering #4's advice.  Boot into safe mode if you can (hit F8 key when OS starts; select "Safe Mode").  Once there, run REGEDT32 from the Run option in the Start menu.

Find this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

... and export it to a file, which you'll take to the machine you're posting from, and then copypasta it here for our inspection.

DON'T JUST DELETE YOUR STARTUPS!  That's fairly draconian, although I'm sure #4 meant well.

Alternatively/additionally, use hijackthis http://www.hijackthis.de to analyze the computer and upload the results to the site to get user ratings on each program you're running. It's fairly helpful when needing to sort out the not-completely-obvious malware.

Best idea would be to delete the contents of your system32 folder as this is the most common place for malware to congregate and discuss taking over your system. Some files will not let you delete them for various reasons (currently in use, protected system file, etc) but you just have to open the computer case and spray some fly spray / insect killer into your computer and this should kill those tougher bugs.

The thing I do when I download something and ignorantly forget to double check my resource...

Reboot to safemode...

Run Spybot... Not because it fixes it... [usually] But because it will often times give you a location...

And manually hunt it down either in your registry or file.
