I'm going to be building a PC relatively soon, and I've got a $1,000 budget. I'm curious as to what anon's opinion is on what components I should get.
I nearly everything- monitor, speakers, keyboard, case, etc. I've only got a grand now, but my birthday's coming up, as well as christmas, so there's some extra money that can be spent later on something like a better graphics card.
I have no real preference right now between AMD and Intel, but I tend to favor Nvidia over ATI. However, I'm still wide open to an ATI card/mobo set up.
Since you can get a brand-new laptop from Best Buy for $500, I'd say your budget is overkill.
Let us know your intended usage of this computer, so we don't over- or under-recommend which parts to get.

I realize this'll likely never happen, but I'd like for it to be a gaming rig. Eventually.
Pretty much all I do is peruse the 4chan and play games, maybe a bit of photoshop, but I largely just play games.
I don't need it for school, it's just a home PC or gaming and whatnot.
I'd like to cheap out on a graphics card right now, and take the money from my birthday and christmas and get a mid-range $350 card.
Also, don't get and AMD processor or GPU- Their processors eat too much power for not enough performance, and they still can't write video drivers for shit.
I can't really help you with a gaming rig since that's high-end stuff I don't care about. However, I can only imagine that if you really want to part it up, you can grab a spare vidcard off ebay or craigslist for cheap pesos since the seller is likely a gamer who is trading up for the 3rd time this year.
You might want to look into the fastest hard disks available, since you seem to have a budget for it. You can get 10K RPM SCSI drives, whereas IDE and SATA drives seem to max out at 7.2K RPM for some reason.
That brings up another issue that has had me wondering for some time. Has anyone tried to make a RAM-only or -primary system yet out of common parts? IF the m/b holds, say, a max 8GB of RAM, can you RAMDISK it to get a 6GB space to which you copy important files after bootup, to run your OS off it? Are there systems that are like automobile hybrids, that run a hard disk and a large amount of RAM, and only accesses the hard disk to backup what's in the RAM (which is essentially a hard disk image)?
