Good laptop for college?

I'll need a laptop for college, as due to a shitty room situation a desktop is just isn't possible.  So, this laptop is going to be my main device for work/gaming etc., and thus I need it to be decent, but not some 3000 dollar thing.  For around 1-1.3k, what's the best comp I can get?

Try Toshiba. You can get a nice laptop for around 1200. Make sure you're spending around that much because if you don't you're gonna get raped and get some phased out single-core POS. If you can find one with like a Core 2 Duo T5500 or something close in the newer Core 2 CPUs, do so.

You've got to be kidding. Macs are just plain crap for anything else except looking "nice" (but this is also a matter of taste and thus can't really be discussed) and Alienware offers bloated pure-gaming laptops with short battery lives and overheating problems for a premium.
Try Samsung. They should have some decent models with better graphics cards. As models are subject to a constant change, I can't really tell you what to get, but you should be able to find what you'll need.

#8, pro gaming rigs run really (thermally) hot graphics cards -- as hot as the CPU and requiring the same type of cooling system.  Do laptops even feature video circuits of the same capability?

FYI, most graphics chipsets run hotter than your average CPU these days
