My dvd-rom says its 16 speed but I bought it new when cd-rom speeds where around the 50's so I have reason to believe 16 dvd-rom speed is purely for dvd-reading speed while I suspect its cd-reading speed would be much higher, but Im not certain of it, maybe you guys could confirm this?, thx ahead of time.

Yes, the two speeds are not directly related. A 1x DVD-rom would read data from a disk about 9 times faster than a 1x CD-rom (in raw bits/sec).
More than likely, your CD reading speed is around 52x, but that's not guaranteed. CD's and DVD's require different lazers to read, so there's no guarantee that a fast DVD drive is a fast CD drive.
