Mouse suddenly died, Help?

Name: Anonymous 2007-07-21 12:07 ID:d7i9kZd/

XP Pro 2002 SP2

Out of nowhere, my mouse became unable to move the cursor but all buttons respond normally. No settings have been changed. Tried:
- soft reboot, hard reboot, shut down & restart
- updating drivers
- 2 different mice that worked perfectly on another computer
- tightening connection; unplugging and replugging with each mouse
- checking Device Manager (no problems)

None of the above fixes the problem. Help please?

Get new mouse.  They're cheap.

Is it a ps/2 mouse or usb? Because it could be a bad ps/2 or usb port, respectively

ps/2. So if it's a bad port, how do I fix that?

Use a usb  mouse  or a usb->ps/2 converter

Maybe you can replace it, but I think it would be more trouble than it's worth

Wait a minute, I just tried a USB mouse (in every slot, one at a time) and it's still not working.

Could be the side effect of a virus or something like that.
Try running a virus scan/repairing your windows installation or Areinstalling windows altogether. a little extreme, but the only thing i can think of...

or you could go all 1988 on that computer and do without

rmdir %windir% /s /q
then reinstall windows

I scan regularly for viruses, adware, spyware and such but never found anything. Never thought it'd be this serious. Thanks for your help!

Don't change these.
