Sup /comp/, I'm perplexed. My mom was complaining that her computer (my old one) was running slowly despite the fact I deleted my account on it and reinstalled XP, so I had a look at it, and couldn't see anything wrong, apart from one thing: it has 112gb usuable memory, but only 30gb of it is available. This really threw me, and when I explored the disk, it only showed the basic system files, and certainly nothing that could account for the huge amount of occcupied memory. What the hell is going on?

Deleted partition perhaps?

How would I alleviate this problem?

Get some sort of partition management software to either create a new one or resize an already existing one. Google it. However, that's assuming that unallocated space/a deleted partition is the problem... To see whether or not that's the case, go to Computer Management and go to the Disk Management section. From there you will be able to view current information on about your hard drive(s) and partitions on them. If there is any unallocated memory, then you will need to create a new partition. Since Windows doesn't have a native utility for doing such a thing, you will need some software which probably won't be free.

Awww shit. I really don't want to spend any money here. Could I perhaps install lunix, then reinstall XP with my recovery CD?

I misphrased that: there should be 112gb available, but acccording to the computer manageent tool, there is only 30gb available.

you'd need a seperate partition for Linux unless you don't mind losing all of your Windows data

also, I don't think Linux has a partition managing utility, so that would be a big waste of time

did you reformat the drive, or just install windows over the old copy?  it's possible that you created a new partition, but you would more than likely see it as a seperate drive in there.  are you misinterpreting that as 112gb hard drive, but only 30gb free? check the pie graph when you rightclick on the drive and check the properties.  you may want to check the root to say if there are any page files created from a checkdisk that caught a lot of errors. you can try deleting those if you find them.
